Live to the hilt

Last week of school is upon me.
I can't believe I have almost finished my second year of teaching.
Where is the time going?

I spent a bit of time reflecting today.
Did I mention that I journal?
Probably no surprise since I am a blogger.
In truth, I have a stack of journals that are full of entries, some dating back to 2000. Although, I officially kept up with the comings and goings of my life around 2004.

It is amazing to go back and reread where you have come from.
How you've grown.
How you've changed.
I was reflecting on how my journal entries reflects one of my favorite quotes:
"Wherever you are, be all there! Live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God." -Jim Elliot

It's funny how often we get into situations that are uncomfortable and we try to fight them.
But if my journals are any testament to that statement, uncomfortable situations have the power to change you---change you for the better.

As I told my youth girls tonight, look for the beauty in everything.
Beauty from just soaking up a warm sunny day.
Reading a good book that reminds you that you are seen---not invisible.
Driving with your windows down.
Beauty is everywhere. It is in every situation. Sometimes you just have to wait for it.

  2. Congrats on ending your 2nd year! I'm ending my third in a few weeks and time just moves faster and faster, so get ready! I also keep journals/diaries. I have been since I was 13. I've got over 35 books filled with all kinds of ridiculous things- taking time to read through them is one of my favorite things to do...although, the farther back you go, the more embarrassing it gets!!

  3. Jen, I didn't know that was one of your favorite quotes! That's MY favorite quote! (And I absolutely love Shadow of the Almighty, have you read it?) Thanks for your blog. It was a wonderful reminder to see God's beauty all around me, despite sadness or pain or discomfort or whatever. You are amazing, inside and out. Love,Amy
